Rainier Prairies North Emergency Radio Net

This web page is a placeholder for a future radio net to support disaster response by a subset of the neighbors in the Nextdoor "Rainier Prairies" neighborhood.   This radio net would be used by a volunteer neighborhood group organized around the "Map Your Neighborhood" concept.   To learn more about "Map Your Neighborhood", watch for announcements of classes by Thurston County Emergency Management or the City of Rainier.

The Nextdoor "Rainier Prairies" neighborhood covers a large area that can't be reliably covered by the inexpensive FRS/GMRS handheld radios we plan to use for neighborhood communication during a disaster event.   The area is also too large for the "Map Your Neighborhood" concept.   Therefore, we're proposing breaking up the Nextdoor-defined "Rainier Prairies" neighborhood into several smaller areas.   The "Rainier Prairies North" group would tentatively be the following neighborhood area just outside of Rainier, WA, USA: North of 133rd Ave, South of 123rd Ave, West of Pless Road, and East of Hubbard Road.   This area is comprised of primarily acreages and should allow us to communicate reliably with each other using inexpensive FRS/GMRS handheld radios.

One radio that we can highly recommend for our neighbors is the Cobra CXT1045R-FLT-CAMO FRS/GMRS radio.   The key features that make this recommended radio a good choice for disaster communications are:

Similar radios are available on the market in our local area stores.   If you have a radio with these key features, you'll be ready to communicate reliably via radio with your neighbors during a disaster event.

For more information on how this group would integrate into our area's disaster communications planning, see the City of Rainier section of the East Thurston County Amateur Radio Emergency Service (ETC ARES) Disaster Communications Plan.
